Iceland's vast unspoiled nature of mountains, highlands, fjords, glaciers and unconventional, almost "Moon and Mars-like", landscape of lava, geothermal hot pools, geysers etc, provide tourists with truly a world class hiking arena. After all it is not every day you would get a chance to hike on top of a glacier in high summer at night time in broad daylight. Iceland is almost the same size as England, inhabited by only 300 thousand people, and of those more than half live in the metropolitan area of Reykjavik. So the countryside has very low population density which leaves plenty left to spare for hiking in the unspoiled nature. Conveniently small seaside villages line up all around the country where supplies are sold and services rendered. Only in the middle of Iceland can there be found spots of near desert wasteland. Past governments investment into tourist infrastructure has improved roads, maps and hiking paths but more investment is needed. It is important that hikers take seriously opinion from locals about weather and hiking routes, each month Iceland's well trained and equipped rescue teams are sent to bail out tourist hikers, most of whom ignored warnings given in good faith by locals. For long journeys always be sure to be well equipped and let locals know where you are going and when you should arrive at your destination point. If you break your leg in the middle of the highlands and nobody is expecting you, the chances might be against you surviving. Weather in Iceland changes extremely fast and it is quite normal in winter time to experience snow blizzard, calm winds and sun, rain and strong winds all in the same day.
