Obviously art galleries and museums in Iceland do not come anywhere close in matching the grandeur and variety of larger European countries and USA. The same goes for architecture since Reykjavik was only a small village prior to world war 2, mostly comprising of dirt roads and sheds. Iceland was at it's culture highpoint at the 13th century and most of it's heritage is invested in literature from that time, for example Prose-Edda and the Icelandic Sagas.
However, in recent decades modern art has flourished as much as it can in a society of only 300 thousand, so every art lover should be able to find something interesting in Reykjavik's galleries. The upside to art strolling in Reykjavik is that many galleries and museums offer free admission, so it is truly a great way to spend a day without spending anything. Museums in the countryside are a handful and some of them should be worth a "dropping into", to name a few: whale and phallological(penis) museum in Husavik, war years museum in Reydarfjordur and ghost museum in Stokkseyri.
