Shopping

Tax Free Shopping

If you are a foreign citizen and shop for more than 4.000 ISK, then you are eligible for a VAT(Value Added Tax) refund. The idea of the VAT is to use it to support social services in Iceland, if you are a tourist you won't be benefiting from those social services and can therefore get a refund. The VAT is usually about 25% of the price, so if you are shopping something expensive, the refund can be a handsome amount. For more information on refund details, please follow the link below.

Kolaportid

Very interesting market in the city center for both new and second hand products. Open on weekends and is housed in doors in a large warehouse, conveniently so for winter openings. Variety of products changes weekend by weekend but clothing, dvd's, cd's, books, antics and food snack can always be found there.

Tryggvagatu 19
101 Reykjavik

Laugavegur

Laugavegur is Iceland's main shopping street. In recent years restaurants and bars have been claiming greater space on the street, contributing to the lively weekend evenings and nights in the area. It has an interesting side street, Skolavordustigur, leading up to Church of Hallgrim. Since these are popular strolling routes of tourists there are plenty of gift and souvenir shops.

Kringlan / Smaralind

Kringlan and Smaralind are Iceland's main shopping centers. Obvious disadvantage is that they are located far from the city center, but they offer wide variety of shops. Kringlan houses 150 shops, restaurants and services. Strangely enough, Smaralind is much larger, but has considerably fewer shops and restaurants. Smaralind often hosts events like concerts, TV broadcasts, public ceremonies etc.
Address of Kringlan is Kringlan 2-4 in 103 Reykjavik.
Address of Smaralind is Hagasmari 1 in 201 Kopavogur.
